Kings of the World Volume 1: Not Even Dead - Jean-Philippe Jaworski

Niveau 14	ArchimedeVD 3 years ago: Hello friends, recently I read the first volume of the "Kings of the World" series by JP Jaworski. It's a science fiction/fantasy type novel that takes place in ancient Gaul (which is what makes it interesting in my opinion). It had been recommended by the journalist Dimitri Pavlenko and I decided to read it. In terms of the setting and the characters, I give a 3.5/5: The characters are well constructed, they all have a distinct personality but I would put a downside on the lack of clarity sometimes due to the names, which come from Celtic culture, they are sometimes hard to remember especially in passages where there are battles or large groups and therefore a multitude of names. The setting of the story, as written above, is located in ancient Gaul, without really any precise indication of temporality. The story itself is, I think, very good and interesting. We follow the story of the life of Bellovèse, son of Sacrovèse, deposed king and assassinated in a war by his brother-in-law Ambigat. Bellovèse was removed from the throne as a child and was raised far from the seat by his mother in a small town in the countryside. One day, Bellovèse and his brother are called to war and Bellovèse is pierced in the torso by a spear during a battle. He miraculously survives and must find the answer to this “non-death” from witches living away from men. The plot of this first volume is therefore based on this journey, as well as on the famous battle, but also on the childhood and adventures of Bellovèse. The flow of the story is well written but sometimes can lack clarity because the author often jumps from one temporality to another between two paragraphs, or even sometimes from one sentence to another. The descriptions can sometimes seem long but also add a very realistic side to the story. The world described is bathed in a sort of mysterious veil, imbued with Celtic myths of the past. I recommend this reading to those who are fans of medieval fantasy or who appreciate a good story and good fiction without too much "magic" and other ridiculous subterfuges. Be careful though, if you read the first volume, there is a good chance that you will want to read the other 2 because the author is not stupid enough to answer the riddles in these first 450 pages
